Dheghom is a world where war, greed, and moral collapse infects everything. It is a setting designed to explore the depravity of unchecked power, the exploitation of the weak, and the fragility of survival. The tales within these lands are meant to challenge PCs, forcing them to navigate a world that offers few victories and far-reaching consequences.
The grimdark themes in Dheghom focus on the pitilessness of existence, not as a reflection of real-world suffering but as a narrative tool to build compelling stories. Whether it's choosing between the starvation of a village and the desecration of sacred land, or surviving the tyranny of industrial overlords, these themes are designed for character immersion, not player discomfort.
This book explores grimdark themes that reflect the ugliest aspects of Dheghom. These include systemic oppression, moral corruption, and the futility of existence. Players may encounter scenarios related to trauma, starvation, forced labor, crimes against children, mutilation, desecration, cannibalism, suffering, body horror, and war crimes. Take the time to speak with your group about what they are comfortable with.
Adventure Avenues
If the gods and their woes are not the focus of your player's adventures in Dheghom, you may still hint at the effects their corrupted presence has in the world. Refugees fleeing blighted regions, beasts driven mad with divine fury, or radicals hunting gods. In the forefront of your campaign, there are numerous avenues of adventure that characters can wander along, which do not deal directly with gods or their corruption.
War
Given that war is nearly a constant state in Dheghom, you can choose to focus adventures on the war efforts in various nations. These adventures can be direct (scouting, battles, peace efforts) or indirect (refugees, deserters, smuggling). A campaign or arc centered on war will oftentimes explore obligation, regret, compromise, survival, and loss.
Politics
Political campaigns can be as brutal as any war campaign, and in Dheghom, this reality is compounded by the numerous factions vying for control. Campaigns focused around politics can be as straightforward as succession to as sweeping as any of the other avenues for adventure listed here as threats of gods, war, magic, and crime act as your focus. Consider disparities in wealth, power, and technology and themes of corruption, tyranny, and parasitism.
Crime
In a world where morality begins with unsure footing, it is difficult to pin down what a criminal act really is. That ambiguity is the basis of campaigns and adventures focused on crime, allowing you to pose questions of desperation, pragmatism, and oppression to your players. Numerous factions engage in ostensibly criminal behavior, but oftentimes their status as a criminal organization is determined by those in power rather than their activities being any less wholesome.
Magic
Most adventuring parties contain at least one wielder of magic, and the strange or dangerous effects of magic will likely draw their attention sooner rather than later. The distrust, fear, and unpredictable phenomena related to the use of magic can create an endless source of fires that need putting out. A campaign centered on magic will inevitably explore the fear, chaos, and devastation caused by its erratic power, affecting both the fates of the adventurer and the world around them.
