Lore

Structure

Lore covers knowledge of creatures and of the world's lost, hidden, and learned subjects.

Lore uses Intelligence. DCs are set by the GM.

At each mastery level, you select one Creature Lore discipline and one Knowledge Lore discipline.

Identification: When you encounter an unknown creature, item, or place within your lore's domain, you can try to identify it against a DC the GM sets. Meeting the DC tells you what it is. The more you beat it by, the more you know about it.

With Daeva Lore, facing a creature: - Success: You recognize a Skeleton Warrior, a Daeva Druj Gestalt. Undead are immune to Profane damage and weak to Sacred damage. - Success by 2: You know it does not breathe, eat, or sleep, and that it is connected to Profane magic. - Success by 4: You know it is immune to Tainted, Infected, and Exhausted.

With Artifact Lore, examining an object: - Success: You recognize a Toadstone, which protects against poison. - Success by 2: You know it grows warm when poison is within 5 feet. - Success by 4: You know it is strongest against ingested poison.

Examining an object takes one exploration round. On a failure, you cannot attempt to identify the same subject again until your attribute tier or Lore mastery increases.

Creature Lores

Creature Lores focus on specific types of beings and provide mechanical combat benefits. When you gain a Creature Lore discipline, you make a one-time choice of how your knowledge manifests in combat:

Slayer (Offensive): You have Dominance on attack rolls and spell damage rolls against that creature type. Warder (Defensive): You have Dominance on defense rolls against that creature type. Defier (Trials): You have Dominance on trials to resist effects from that creature type, such as its breath, charm, fear, or possession.

This choice is permanent for that specific Creature Lore. Different Creature Lores can have different choices — you could be a Dragon Slayer, Daeva Warder, and Fae Defier.

Asura Lore

The study of asura, such as celestial, holy, or angelic beings. This skill represents your understanding of asura in all of their forms and helps you identify unknown asura and their intentions as well as harvest valuable asura parts.

Daeva Lore

The study of daeva, such as devils, demons, undead, and fiendish creatures. This skill represents your understanding of daeva in all of their forms and helps you identify unknown daeva and their intentions as well as harvest valuable daeva parts.

Dragon Lore

The study of dragons. This skill represents your understanding of dragons in all of their forms and helps you identify unknown dragons and their intentions as well as harvest valuable dragon parts.

Fae Lore

The study of fae creatures, such as elves, gnomes, and orcs, or other fae, such as fairies and nymphs. This skill represents your understanding of the fae in all of their forms and helps you identify unknown fae and their intentions as well as harvest valuable fae parts.

Morphon Lore

The study of morphon beings, the forms of things without their substance. They are met in thin places: thresholds, crossroads, and the edge of sleep, where the void shows through. This skill represents your understanding of morphon beings in all of their forms and helps you identify unknown morphon beings, tell a true form from a false one, and recognize the places where they appear.

Primordial Lore

The study of primordials, such as dwarves, elementals, behemoths, and ancient creatures. This skill represents your understanding of primordials in all of their forms and helps you identify unknown primordials and their intentions as well as harvest valuable primordial parts.

Knowledge Lores

Knowledge Lores provide utility, identification capabilities, and situational advantages but no universal combat bonuses. Each Knowledge Lore includes the ability to identify and appraise items, materials, and objects within its domain. Appraisal is the ability to estimate the value of an item, particularly gems and magical items once they have been identified. A Merchant's Scale grants Dominance on trials to appraise coins, gems, and similar precious materials. A character with Stone Lore can appraise gems and stonework; a character with Artifact Lore can appraise magical items; a character with Curse Lore can appraise cursed items; and so on. Without the relevant lore, you lack the knowledge to accurately value what you are looking at.

Ancient Lore

The study of lost civilizations and their knowledge. Ancient Lore covers four fields:

  • Ancient History: lost civilizations, species, and peoples, and the places and mundane artifacts they left behind.
  • Ancient Languages: tongues no longer spoken, and the strange symbols and lost writing they survive in.
  • Ancient Geography: how the lands and waters have changed, so you can find places that seem out of place today.
  • Ancient Religions: the faiths of the past, and their texts and precepts.

Artifact Lore

The study of magical items and their properties. This skill helps you identify unknown magical items. Artifact Lore is not used in the creation of magical items.

Cultural Lore

The study of cultures, civilizations, and their peoples: their history, customs, cities, and towns, and the important locations, peoples, and landmarks within them. Cultural Lore also covers heraldry, the arms that mark rank, pedigree, and reputation among the nobility, and law, the written codes of a land and the punishments they set for common crimes.

Curse Lore

The study of curses and their effects on people, places, and creatures. Because curses lack a certain regularity and can often have unpredictable outcomes, it takes a certain kind of wisdom and understanding to unlock their mysteries. Curse Lore is necessary for the creation of cursed items.

Heterodox Lore

The study of forgotten, forbidden, and secret knowledge: suppressed teachings, hidden cults and their rites, and beliefs the wise and learned reject. This lore is often passed from teacher to student, because few if any books exist, and those that do are of doubtful origin.

Stone Lore

Your ability to track your location underground, navigate tight spaces, and identify unusual stone, masonry, or other discrepancies that might indicate secret passages or other valuable information — such as traps involving moving stone walls or blocks of stone, secret doors involving moving stone walls, newly built stone constructions, and gently sloping stonework.
