Gnome

She curiously watches the battle play out before her. Humans and orcs clashing again. They fight like children, albeit deadly children. She watched a similar battle perhaps a decade ago and on and off every few decades for as long as she could recall. They didn't know she was there, watching. She had learned quite a bit over the years and was writing her third or fourth volume detailing their practices. A large explosion caught her eye, and she began to scribble once again.

She is a gnome. A demihuman thought to be myth by most, and not thought of at all by the rest. She is fascinated by all things, a true student of the world, and still likely more knowledgeable of it than the self-proclaimed experts. She is more than skilled with weapons, but usually finds such pursuits more than a passing fancy. It is in the ways of magic that her mastery lies, and for it, she remains unknown.

Gnome Experience Table

Experience. When this number of Experience Points have been earned, you automatically move up to the next Level of Experience.

Title. You should use this title when talking with other characters. Instead of saying "I'm Noldor, a Fifth Level Gnome," you should say "I'm Noldor, the Learner."

Health. You gain 2 health per 3 levels of experience in addition to any health gained from your endurance.

Skills. At first level, you begin with 2 Skill Mastery points, which must be spent immediately on Skills. You may use these points to advance Skills to Untrained mastery, but no further at this level.

Spell Mastery. At first level, you begin with 3 Spell Mastery points, which must be spent immediately on up to 5 Spell Forms. You may use these points to advance Spell Forms to Untrained mastery, but no further at this level.

  • As a gnome, you can learn Fire, Sea, Sky, and Stone magic and may choose either Primal or Void magic, but may not learn both.
  • You gain 1 Spell Mastery point per level. At level 11, this increases to 2 points per level. At level 21, this increases to 3 points per level.

Weapon Mastery. At first level, you begin with 2 Weapon Mastery points, which must be spent immediately on Weapon Types or Combat Styles. You may use these points to advance Weapon Types and Combat Styles to Untrained mastery, but no further at this level.

  • You gain 1 Weapon Mastery point per level. At level 16, this increases to 2 points per level. At level 26, this increases to 3 points per level.
  • You can obtain Expert mastery with a gnome.

Leveled Abilities

You gain abilities below as you increase level.

Fae

As a Fae being, you are immune to Primal damage and have Impotence on trials to resist Void damage. You are connected to the Primal magic form. Only Primal magic can Charm, Control, summon, or banish you, or restore your mind (see Magic Mastery, Connected Form). All other magic affects you normally.

Gnomic Nature

Small. Your small size makes it hard for larger creatures to hit you. You have dominance on defense rolls against creatures large or larger.

Scotopic Sight. Within 200 feet, creatures in ambient light are not Concealed from you. Within 20 feet, creatures in absolute darkness are not Concealed from you, though you see them only in grayscale. While you are in light, you lose the benefit in absolute darkness.

Gnosis. You automatically advance in the Lore Skill Mastery. You begin with Untrained Mastery, gain Basic Mastery at level 3, Skilled Mastery at level 6, gain Expert Mastery at level 10, Master Mastery at level 15, and Grand Mastery at level 21. These skills do not count against your Skill Mastery points.

Priscan Magic

Level 1

You can cast priscan spells. You have a number of Magan, or spell points, equal to half your Perception score (rounded down). For each Perception Tier up to your current tier, roll the corresponding tier die and add the result. Each time your Perception Tier increases, roll the new tier die and add it to your magan. You recover magan through rest and sustenance (see Resting).

Each spell you cast reduces your available magan by the spell's magan cost.

  • The DC of your spells is equal to your Mastery Level + your Perception Tier (maximum 14).

Training. You are trained by an elder gnome of at least Expert mastery or higher. At level one, when you select your Untrained forms, your mentor teaches you two spells. When you first reach Basic mastery in any form, your mentor teaches you an additional spell. When you first reach Skilled mastery in any form, your mentor teaches you a final spell.

Spell Acquisition. You can also learn spells independently by sensing fonts of priscan magic. You observe the font and record initial impressions, then document your findings in your compendium, expending magan² ss in experimental materials. Internalizing a spell takes 1 day per magan. See the Magic Mastery chapter, Spell Sources and Discovery.

Compendium

You document your magical observations in a compendium: a detailed record of every font encountered, every phenomenon observed, and every conclusion drawn. Each spell requires 2 pages per magan of meticulous notes, diagrams, and cross-references. The writing process is how you internalize magic; once a spell is fully documented and understood, you can cast it without the compendium in hand. Losing your compendium does not prevent you from casting spells you have already learned, but it destroys your accumulated research and any partial work on spells in progress.

Studied Enemy

Level 1

You spend time dissecting the enemy's techniques, patterns, and weaknesses through focused observation, translating knowledge into tactical advantage.

Spend 2 AP observing one enemy you can see within 60 feet. Make a trial using your Intelligence tier die + Perception tier die and compare the result to the following table. The result grants a benefit against that enemy for the duration of the encounter. Benefits apply only to your own attacks and spells against that enemy. Results that apply to "attacks" apply to your weapon attack rolls and to damage rolls for spells that directly target that enemy (chosen as a target, not caught in an area). Results that apply to the target's trials to resist your spells apply to any of your spells. You can only gain one benefit per enemy, but may study as many enemies as you choose.

Roll Results
2-3 -1 penalty on target's defense rolls
4 +1 to attacks
5 -1 penalty on the target's trials to resist your spells
6-7 Inferiority on target's defense rolls
8 +2 to attacks

13-14 -2 penalty on target's defense rolls
