Baleros
History
Cyclopian myth describes their Bloom Age origins within the southern lands of Oskara, asserting the Ori Balarika mountains as their ancestral homeland, granted by their gods and held since time immemorial. Early Cyclopian communities mastered their varied lands, from mountains to coasts, developing societies centered on strength and perhaps early forms of statecraft. Their histories claim the Ori Balarika range as the heart of their territory, a belief central to their identity.
The Blood Age brought widespread chaos, forcing conflict upon the Cyclopian ancestors. Records from this era are fragmented, but Baleran tradition holds that defense against encroaching peoples, possibly the proto-Avenarians or others, necessitated an alliance with the Dwergar peoples situated to the north. Their strength and commitment in fulfilling their side of the pact, expecting a similar honor from the Dwergar. Although victory was achieved, the alliance fractured almost immediately. The Dwergar occupied the majority of the Ori Balarika range, territory the Cyclopians considered theirs by right. This betrayal unified the Cyclopian communities into a single nation, driven by the shared grievance over the lost mountains and the perceived treachery of the Dwergar.
The Blight Age has been shaped entirely by the Ho Polemos against Korath. Centuries have been defined by relentless, costly campaigns aimed at retaking the Ori Balarika. Major efforts, including the First and Second Sieges against Kizar Korath, are remembered as attempts to liberate their lands from the Dwergar occupiers, who relied on formidable defenses. Baleros adapted readily to the era's new technologies; black powder and advanced siege engines were adopted and refined specifically as tools to overcome Korath's mountain fortifications. This long, singular focus forged Baleros into a highly militarized state, its resources consistently directed towards the northern conflict.
Now, millennia after the original betrayal, reports suggest the Dwergar kingdom of Korath is weakened by internal division and plague. For Baleros, this presents a potential turning point in their long struggle. The ancient grievance remains the core of their foreign policy and national identity. However, the political landscape is dangerous, making preparations for renewed efforts to reclaim the Ori Balarika unwieldy, despite the perceived opportunity to finally succeed where generations past have failed.
Government
Baleros is a Stratocracy, ruled through the Strategoi Council, which is composed of the highest-ranking military leader from each major Cyclopian Polis or Khora. This council directs national strategy, allocates resources, and oversees Ho Polemos against Korath. While nominally a collective, representation is influenced by the contributing power of each member's domain, with the Strategos of Ostiros often holding significant sway due to the capital's importance. The Council's focus remains fixed on the conflict that forged their nation.
From amongst its members, the Strategoi Council elects a supreme commander, often titled the Polemarchos or War-King, to lead the nation's military efforts. This position carries a fixed term of twelve years, and an individual cannot be immediately re-elected, ensuring circulation of command. Constitutionally, the War-King role is only activated during times of war; however, as Baleros considers Ho Polemos to have been continuous since the Great Betrayal in the Blood Age, the position has been perpetually filled for millennia.
The conflict with Korath has been institutionalized as the central pillar of Baleran statecraft. While the Polemarchos provides unified military command, real political power resides within the Council, leading to constant maneuvering among the Strategoi for influence and position ahead of each election cycle. This system prioritizes experienced military leadership above all other aspects of Cyclopian life.
Interesting Facts
-
Epic poetry is often performed in public venues, sometimes with drums and accompanying music. These poems may recount myths of the Bloom Age and Blood Age about the gods or heroic cycles and battle. For many Cyclopeans, the only path to immortality is to become part of these cycles.
-
Precise geometric patterns hold significant aesthetic value in Baleran crafts, from textiles to pottery to architectural stonework. Some Baleran philosophers argue this preference stems from the Cyclopian single eye finding measurable order and symmetry particularly visually harmonious or easier to perceive than more complex, asymmetrical designs.
-
Public debate is a high art among the cyclopes, considered a vital skill for leaders and citizens alike. In the nation's cities and larger settlements, open forums are common spaces where vigorous philosophical contests are held and the great epic poetry cycles are performed, often drawing large, critical audiences.
Current Challenges
-
The Ho Polemos. Recent intelligence suggests that Korath is significantly weakened. This news has created pressure within the Strategoi Council. Hawkish factions demand an immediate, full-scale assault to finally reclaim the Ori Balarika, arguing such an opportunity may never come again. More cautious members, however, warn that Dwergar defenses remain formidable and that another failed siege could shatter Baleros for generations.
-
The Merchant Question. The endless war is funded more and more by the wealth of a growing merchant class based in Ostiros. Enriched by trade in quarried stone, logistical contracts, and the production of black powder weaponry based on foreign designs, these powerful families have begun to leverage their economic power to demand political influence. This has created an internal struggle between the traditional military aristocracy of the Strategoi Council and the new merchant lords, a conflict of influence fought with coin rather than steel.
-
The Wild Tribes. The Council's authority is tenuous in the western plains and southern wilderness. The tribes in these territories are fiercely independent, resisting centralized rule and often evading tax collectors. This cultural divide has deepened with the state's adoption of black powder, as many tribes hold to older warrior traditions and view firearms as a cowardly departure from the ideal of individual strength. The state needs the resources and hardy warriors these tribes produce, but its attempts to impose control or enforce new military doctrines are met with defiance.
The Strategoi Council
Baleran politics is dominated by the ambitions of its ancient political parties, formal alliances of Strategoi who constantly maneuver for control of the Council. The primary goal of each party is to elect one of its own as Polemarchos, giving them control over the nation's armies and resources. The endless rivalries between these parties have created a state of political paralysis, resulting in intrigue, shifting alliances, and outright sabotage. This long-standing stalemate has recently been shattered by the emergence of new, powerful players, creating a chaotic and unpredictable five-sided political war.
The Patrikoi
The oldest political party in Baleros, the Patrikoi's platform is built on the legacy of the "heroic lines." They are the arch-traditionalists, arguing that only those with the blood of heroes possess the legitimacy to rule. They are masters of the Council's ancient procedures, but their rigid adherence to tradition has left them struggling to adapt to the new political realities, forcing them into a desperate battle to maintain their fading influence.
The Akropolitai
The ancient rivals of the Patrikoi, the Akropolitai party was formed by meritocratic commanders from the northern garrisons. Their platform is one of ruthless pragmatism and proven results over ancestry. For centuries, they were the primary opposition, but the rise of new factions has threatened their position, forcing them to consider uneasy alliances and compromises that betray their meritocratic ideals in the simple pursuit of power.
Antigonus's Legion
A new and disruptive political force, this faction is not a true party but a personality cult built around the charismatic and ferociously successful general, Antigonus. Sick of the political stalemate, Antigonus has used his recent victories and the fanatical loyalty of his veteran legions to bypass the Council entirely, wielding his army as a political party in its own right. His meteoric rise has terrified the old parties and thrown the entire political landscape into chaos.
The Synoikía
Formed in direct response to the threat posed by Antigonus, the Synoikía is a desperate and uneasy alliance of several lesser "heroic lines" who were not powerful enough to lead the Patrikoi but now fear their own extinction. They are conservatives scrambling for survival, banding together to create a voting bloc strong enough to balance the scales. Their loyalties are fractured, and their alliance is a marriage of convenience that could collapse at any moment.
The Chorēgoí
The "Sponsors" are the external force that profits from the chaos. This class of wealthy industrialists and merchants holds no seats on the Council but funds all sides of the political conflict. With the rise of new factions, their role has become more important than ever. They throw their immense wealth behind whichever player or party seems most likely to grant them the lucrative contracts and economic policies they desire, ensuring that no matter who wins the political war, they control the economy.
